Globalization has transformed the transportation industry in the last two decades, and emerging technologies -- such as the connected car, autonomous vehicles, the rise of smart cities, location-based services and new business models -- are forcing various stakeholders, from businesses to regulators, to work better together.

We see this in every area of transportation. The two-way communication between a vehicle and the cloud offers a wealth of possibilities. We can access such up-to-date content as the latest maps and software features. OEMs can gather diagnostic data from vehicles on the road to detect, analyze and address issues in record time. Data gathered from the car can then be sent to the servicing dealer ahead of time to help improve scheduling and provide faster, better service.

In aviation, automating maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) workflows -- using cloud-based systems that can include mobility support -- are generating a reduction in inventory levels while service levels go up. Improving the design of service strategies is leading to more integrated MRO strategies industry-wide.

Railways are using cloud computing to digitize networks for enabling faster connectivity at a reduced cost.
