An extremely time consuming task, but theoretically feasible with the right resources and focus. [Anthropic's recent research](https://www.anthropic.com/research/discovering-cryptographic-weaknesses) has fundamentally changed that calculus by exposing a new, immediate, cryptographic reality. By autonomously discovering mathematical vulnerabilities in HAWK, and accelerating attacks on reduced-round AES, [frontier AI models](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/2026/05/defenders-guide-frontier-ai-impact-cybersecurity-may-2026-update/) have proven that cryptographic exposure is not tethered to the pace of quantum research and the development of a [Cryptographically Relevant Quantum Computer (CRQC)](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/cyberpedia/crqcs-cryptographically-relevant-quantum-computers). There are analogous threats to current cryptography: an accelerating quantum timeline **AND** the threat of AI weakening or breaking today's cryptography without a CRQC. The timeline for enterprises to complete their cryptographic reset has compressed from 2029/2030 to **now**. ## The Shift to Active Defense The Anthropic report indicates that static security margins are increasingly vulnerable to AI-driven classical shortcuts like the ["Möbius Bridge,"](https://www-cdn.anthropic.com/c88771e1bf5ee8885349eed05e5484c0e5f7e02b/aes_mobius_bridge.pdf) breaking the traditional dependency on quantum hardware timelines and directly impacting [Harvest Now, Decrypt Later (HNDL)](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/cyberpedia/harvest-now-decrypt-later-hndl) risk. If AI can autonomously discover mathematical shortcuts in current algorithms today, the "later" in HNDL will arrive much sooner than 2029. AI has emerged as an advanced cryptanalysis engine capable of stress-testing foundational cryptographic algorithms, applying a level of mathematical scrutiny these core ciphers have never before faced. Cryptographic agility must now address two parallel fronts: AI-driven weakening of classical algorithms today and quantum breaking of asymmetric primitives in the near future. ## The Strategic Mandate for Cryptographic Agility The 2029 benchmark is no longer a viable target for a secure cryptographic or "quantum-safe" end state. AI-driven cryptanalysis means the technical transition to an agile posture must be operational by 2026. Addressing this exposure requires a shift from static encryption to **Cryptographic Agility**. An agile architecture must support a broadest range of the strongest algorithms and enable the rapid deprecation of encryption that is proven insecure over time. Organizations should adopt a clear strategic approach: * **Establishing comprehensive visibility:** Implement a real-time cryptographic inventory to map encryption assets across the environment. Establishing a living continuous and automated Cryptographic Bill of Materials (CBOM) allows organizations to monitor for insecure ciphers and answer the inevitable technical inquiries regarding whether effective security margins have changed due to new AI-discovered vulnerabilities. Palo Alto Networks provides these capabilities as part of a continuous cryptographic discovery framework. * **Maintain current AES deployments and standardized PQC:** Do not alter current AES configurations based on this research; full AES-128 and AES-256 remain secure. Restrict PQC migrations to finalized NIST standards such as ML-KEM, ML-DSA, and SLH-DSA, avoiding the risks associated with non-standard experimental drafts like HAWK. * **Developing operational and architectural capacity:** Build the capacity to transition to emerging standards as they are finalized by bodies like NIST. Use perimeter and edge devices, including firewalls, load balancers, and CDNs, as strategic encryption proxy control points. This architecture allows the agile rotation of cryptographic algorithms for internet-facing communications and removes manual updates. Palo Alto Networks delivers this agility today, enforcing post-quantum standards without infrastructure replacement. ## The Cryptographic Reset AI and quantum are not converging into a single attack; they are weaving a web of synchronized threats that demand an immediate transition to continuous cryptographic agility. As adversaries increasingly weaponize AI for high-speed cryptanalysis by identifying and exploiting subtle cryptographic weaknesses at scale the defense must also be AI-driven. This convergence requires more than a simple algorithm swap; it is a fundamental reset in how digital trust and confidentiality are managed, using AI to detect and neutralize automated attacks before they can compromise legacy or transitioning systems. Palo Alto Networks is driving this transformation by aligning technical innovation with emerging global standards like NIST and CNSA 2.0. Our commitment centers on providing full cryptographic visibility and supporting standardized PQCs across the enterprise. By leveraging our [Quantum-Safe Security](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/quantum-safe), we provide continuous AI-ready cryptographic inventory and real-time risk assessments to counter the dual threats of Harvest Now, Decrypt Later (HNDL) and AI-enhanced cryptanalysis. For legacy systems that cannot be updated immediately, our [Quantum-Safe Security App](https://docs.paloaltonetworks.com/network-security/quantum-security/administration/quantum-safe-security) serves as an inline defense, intercepting classical encryption and upgrading it in real-time to quantum-safe algorithms at the network edge. This is the cryptographic reset: a shift from static, perimeter-based encryption to an agile framework that stays ahead of both AI cryptanalysis and the quantum horizon. By integrating automated discovery with real-time remediation, we ensure that the enterprise's cryptographic posture is as dynamic and intelligent as the adversaries seeking to undermine it. *** ** * ** *** ## Related Blogs ### [Data Security](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/network-security/category/data-security/?ts=markdown), [Points of View](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/points-of-view/?ts=markdown), [Product Features](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/sase/category/product-features/?ts=markdown), [Threat Intelligence](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/threat-intelligence-1/?ts=markdown) [#### The Breach You Don't See Coming: Discover and Protect Your Hidden Shadow Data with AI](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com.au/blog/sase/the-breach-you-dont-see-coming-discover-and-protect-your-hidden-shadow-data-with-ai/) ### [Announcement](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/announcement/?ts=markdown), [Cybersecurity](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/cybersecurity/?ts=markdown), [Data Security](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/network-security/category/data-security/?ts=markdown) [#### Palo Alto Networks Joins DNS-OARC as a Platinum Member](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com.au/blog/2026/04/joins-dns-oarc-platinum-member/) ### [AI Security](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/ai-security/?ts=markdown), [Cybersecurity](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/cybersecurity/?ts=markdown), [Next-Generation Firewalls](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/network-security/category/next-generation-firewalls/?ts=markdown), [Products and Services](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/products-and-services/?ts=markdown), [Strata Network Security Platform](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/network-security/category/strata-network-security-platform/?ts=markdown), [Threat Intelligence](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/threat-intelligence-1/?ts=markdown) [#### Why Integrated Threat Defense and Autonomous Remediation Are the Only Strategy for the AI Era](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com.au/blog/network-security/integrated-defense-threat-insights/) ### [AI and Cybersecurity](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/security-operations/category/ai-and-cybersecurity/?ts=markdown), [AI Security](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/ai-security/?ts=markdown), [Cybersecurity](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/cybersecurity/?ts=markdown), [Threat Intelligence](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/threat-intelligence-1/?ts=markdown), [Unit 42](https://unit42.paloaltonetworks.com) [#### The Case for Multidomain Visibility](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com.au/blog/2025/10/case-for-multidomain-visibility/) ### [Cybersecurity](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/cybersecurity/?ts=markdown), [Products and Services](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/products-and-services/?ts=markdown), [Threat Intelligence](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/threat-intelligence-1/?ts=markdown), [Unit 42](https://unit42.paloaltonetworks.com) [#### Top Three Ways Organizations Were Unprepared for Cyberattacks in 2023](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com.au/blog/2024/11/top-three-ways-organizations-were-unprepared-for-cyberattacks-in-2023/) ### [Cybersecurity](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/cybersecurity/?ts=markdown), [Products and Services](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/products-and-services/?ts=markdown), [Threat Intelligence](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/blog/category/threat-intelligence-1/?ts=markdown) [#### GenAI in Cybersecurity --- Threats and Defenses](https://www.paloaltonetworks.com.au/blog/2024/10/genai-in-cybersecurity-threats-and-defenses/) ### Subscribe to Network Security Blogs!
