Complexity at the intersection of IT and OT
When I entered this industry, nearly 30 years ago, information technology (IT) people didn’t know – or care – very much about operational technology (OT).
That wasn’t surprising: OT simply wasn’t on the radar for CIOs and CISOs yet. It was a completely different environment, walled off from IT, with completely separate issues. OT systems hadn’t become digitised to any meaningful extent, and IT systems and OT systems were miles apart – often not just figuratively, but literally. Besides, we told ourselves that IT was where all the exciting stuff was happening: semiconductors, the internet, mobile computing, and the cloud. OT was about oil derricks, foundries, and people wearing hard hats.
But then things changed: OT systems not only started to embrace digital technology but also became increasingly connected to the IT world. We all started to get an understanding of OT’s role as critical infrastructure. And that’s when cybersecurity in the converged OT/IT worlds became a very big deal.
