Palo Alto Networks today announced that Sonic Solutions (NASDAQ: SNIC) has selected Palo Alto Networks’ PA-4000 Series for user-based visibility and control over all port 80 Web traffic.  As a result, Sonic is able to maximize Web usage in the creation of digital media solutions while limiting unnecessary bandwidth consumption and protecting the company from Web-based threats.

Sonic Solutions is the world's leading provider of consumer digital media creation applications and produces innovative, easy-to-use products and media services for the creation, management and sharing of digital media. Sonic Solutions provides a broad range of interoperable, platform independent software tools and applications for creative professionals, consumers and technology partners. With 14 locations worldwide, the company needed to more effectively monitor Web traffic on a global basis – for the purposes of security and controlling non-business applications that were degrading performance.

“Our existing security infrastructure was completely blind to what was tunneling over port 80,” said Roger Blakely, Vice President of Information Security for Sonic Solutions. “With the PA-4000 Series, we have visibility and control over all Web traffic, enabling our employees the access they need to work effectively, without compromising network bandwidth or security.  And the integration with Active Directory enables us to monitor and control applications on a per-user basis, resulting in more effective application usage and security policies. This has enabled us to improve our intellectual property protection dramatically. We can consolidate our firewall infrastructure and provide better protection in doing so.”

Based on Palo Alto Networks’ patent pending App-ID™ application classification technology, its PA-4000 Series is a next-generation firewall that gives organizations unmatched visibility into, and policy control over, applications flowing in and out of networks, regardless of port, protocol or SSL encryption. The PA-4000 Series identifies traditional and emerging applications – including those embedded in an SSL session – to facilitate total application access and usage control while enabling broad, real-time threat prevention.

“Our customers understand that their existing firewalls and security infrastructure are ineffective and the lack of visibility and control is putting their business at risk,” said Steve Mullaney, Vice President of Marketing for Palo Alto Networks. “The PA-4000 Series next-generation firewalls can initially be deployed transparently as a complement to the existing firewalls and security infrastructure and over time, replace the existing firewalls to enable a smooth operational migration.”
