February 20, 2014 – Palo Alto Networks (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Morihiro Kinjo), the leader in enterprise security, today announced that its security platform has been selected and deployed by Kyushu University (Fukuoka, Japan) to identify, control, and safely enable applications on their network.

As an association in charge of services related to information, the Information Infrastructure Initiative of Kyushu University states their mission is to provide students, staff members, and all people whether inside or outside the university with the best online experience. ICT utilization is enabled throughout the campus, ensuring students are able to work regardless of their location.

Naomi Fujimura, Vice CIO and Director of Information Infrastructure Initiative says, "Our challenge was accurate rejection of file exchange software, since we encourage students to bring their own devices. Not only controlling previous firewall IP addresses and ports, enabling disconnection of file exchange software via P2P apps, yet accepting the usage of Skype was enabled by realization of application control with high precision by the Palo Alto Networks security platform."

The Palo Alto Networks platform enabled total control of applications for all the departments in the university, strengthening network security university wide. In addition to accurate blocking of file exchange software, security has been improved and it has contributed to the BYOD experience for students and staff. Security costs have also been reduced, by centralized management and control.

The deployment includes a PA-5050, which provides IPS, anti-virus system, URL filtering, and security functions for VPN in a single platform. At the same time, as a high speed Internet gateway device, visualization and control are available for apps, users, and contents.
