To address tool sprawl, protect student data, and gain visibility into AI usage, Northwest ISD partnered with Palo Alto Networks to build an integrated security platform. Starting with a foundation of Next-Generation Firewalls and Strata Cloud Manager, the district layered in Cortex XSIAM for automated detection and response, AI Access and DLP to govern generative AI use, and Enterprise Device Security to bring every connected endpoint into view. Backed by a Unit 42 Retainer for ongoing threat readiness, this platform gives Northwest ISD a unified way to defend its network, secure its device footprint, and support its AI adoption goals.

Illuminating the network with Strata Cloud Manager and NGFWs
To build a foundational layer of modernized visibility and secure network segments, Northwest ISD deployed Palo Alto Networks Next-Generation Firewalls—hardware firewalls for perimeter security and VM-Series software firewalls on-premises—managed through Strata Cloud Manager. The firewalls give the network team the granular visibility to block dangerous internet traffic without impeding student access to vital digital learning tools. Northwest ISD also gained data-driven dashboards in a readable format, giving leadership the contextual insight to share compliance frameworks directly with stakeholders and foster community trust. This automated protection lets the district ensure its 5,000+ monthly security alerts are automatically mitigated through cloud-delivered security services integrated directly into the firewalls, providing a critical buffer against automated threat traffic.

Automated security operations modernization with Cortex XSIAM
Northwest ISD transitioned from a homegrown legacy SIEM and a third-party managed SOC vendor directly to Cortex XSIAM. By consolidating endpoint detection and response (EDR), user behavior analytics, and automated orchestration into a single solution, the platform resolved the district’s complex data correlation issues. By automatically stitching raw cross-source telemetry, Cortex XSIAM uses SmartGrouping to turn disparate alerts into unified, fully enriched incidents. The platform now auto-triages and closes 19 repetitive incidents daily—including slide-deck malware downloads and phishing enrichment—slashing median time to resolution from one hour to under 60 seconds and saving $100,000 annually.

Establishing guardrails for classrooms with AI access and DLP
To conquer the risks of unmanaged AI sprawl, Northwest ISD deployed Palo Alto Networks AI Access alongside Enterprise Data Loss Prevention (DLP). The deployment instantly revealed that 80% of faculty and staff were using generative AI. Rather than blocking AI innovation, AI Access allows the district to establish clear safety guardrails, so students can learn from and use AI safely without risking data security. This framework also supports the educational needs of classrooms, letting students leverage AI as a tool that expands their depth of learning without limiting critical cognition or enabling cheating. The system uses real-time prompt-scanning via DLP to block users from uploading sensitive personally identifiable information (PII) or confidential district records into public AI training models, automatically notifying the end user of the policy violation to reinforce proper AI governance.

Neutralizing IoT vulnerabilities with Enterprise Device Security
In an open educational environment, new unmanaged devices are always joining the campus network, ranging from student-owned cell phones to visitor hardware brought onto school grounds. Activating Enterprise Device Security allowed Northwest ISD to instantly discover 70,000 connected devices, identifying hidden legacy devices and active firmware vulnerabilities. The targeted solution eliminated manual device discovery for the engineering team by automatically indexing every endpoint, providing the precise control needed to isolate vulnerable hardware, track unauthorized device relocation, and prevent malicious lateral movement across the network.

Recognizing the sophisticated nature of contemporary threat groups, the district complemented its primary technology stack by securing a Unit 42 Retainer. This gives Northwest ISD on-demand access to proactive services and rapid incident response, helping them strengthen defenses before an attack and recover faster if one occurs. Moving forward, the district will use its service credits to conduct proactive, cross-professional tabletop exercises to continuously test and refine its emergency response protocols and overall resilience.
